Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flavanol-rich cocoa powder is a dietary supplement and food ingredient derived from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree. It is specifically processed to retain high levels of naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds known as flavanols, including epicatechin and catechin. These compounds are potent antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties. Flavanol-rich cocoa powder has been studied for its potential cardiovascular benefits, such as improving endothelial function, reducing blood pressure by enhancing nitric oxide synthesis (which relaxes blood vessels), inhibiting platelet activation (thus reducing clot formation), and lowering LDL cholesterol[1][2][3][4]. There is also evidence suggesting possible benefits for brain health through improved cerebral blood flow and cognitive function[1][3]. The U.S. FDA allows qualified health claims that consumption of high-flavanol cocoa powder may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease; however, it notes that scientific evidence supporting this claim is very limited[2]. Flavanol content can be significantly reduced by processing methods such as alkalization ("Dutching"), so only specially processed products labeled "flavanol-rich" or "high-flavanol" provide these effects.
