Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) is a redox-active coenzyme form of vitamin B2 (riboflavin). It is a condensation product of riboflavin and adenosine diphosphate. FAD functions as an essential cofactor for various aerobic dehydrogenases and oxidoreductases—collectively known as flavoenzymes or flavoproteins—which are involved in electron transfer reactions in cellular metabolism. Clinically, FAD is used to treat conditions associated with vitamin B2 deficiency such as keratitis, blepharitis, stomatitis, eczema, and metabolic disorders. It is approved for use in Japan under the trade names Adeflavin and Flavitan for ophthalmic indications related to vitamin B2 deficiency[1][3][4][5]. FAD acts primarily by serving as an electron carrier within the mitochondrial respiratory chain and other metabolic pathways. Many oxidoreductase enzymes require FAD as a prosthetic group for their activity[1][4]. No significant adverse reactions have been reported.
