Overview

Flavokawain A (FKA) is a natural chalcone constituent derived from the kava plant (*Piper methysticum*). It is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and various malignancies due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic properties. FKA acts by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway and downregulating matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), which leads to a reduction in extracellular matrix (ECM) markers such as fibronectin and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1). In preclinical models of CKD, FKA has demonstrated the ability to attenuate renal fibrosis and improve kidney function. Additionally, FKA is widely studied in oncology for its ability to induce apoptosis and inhibit proliferation in bladder, prostate, and breast cancer cells.
