Flavonoid d refers to one of a group of flavonoids extracted from the whole herb of Lomatogonium rotatum, a plant used in Mongolian Chinese Materia Medica. These flavonoids have demonstrated hypolipidemic and obesity-inhibiting effects in preclinical studies. In male Wistar rats fed a high-fructose diet, administration of these flavonoids for 12 weeks led to decreased serum levels of fasting blood glucose, feeding blood glucose, and leptin, as well as reduced triglyceride and cholesterol levels, and increased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). The mechanism of action involves the downregulation of leptin levels, reduction of fatty acid synthase (FAS) protein expression, and enhancement of threonine-172 phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in the liver. These actions suggest that flavonoid d, and similar flavonoids, may inhibit FAS activity and stimulate AMPK, similar to epigallocatechin gallate.
