Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flaxseed is the seed of the plant Linum usitatissimum and is widely used as a dietary supplement. It is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, lignans (phytoestrogens with antioxidant properties), and both soluble and insoluble fiber. Flaxseed’s primary mechanisms include providing anti-inflammatory effects via ALA, modulating cholesterol absorption through phytosterols and fiber content, supporting hormonal balance due to phytoestrogens (lignans), and improving digestive health by increasing stool bulk. Flaxseed has been studied for its potential benefits in lowering cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, stabilizing blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes, aiding weight management by promoting satiety, relieving constipation due to its high fiber content, supporting cardiovascular health by reducing atherosclerosis risk factors, possibly protecting against certain cancers (notably breast cancer), alleviating menopausal symptoms through estrogen receptor modulation by lignans, and reducing inflammation markers such as CRP and IL-6[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. It is available as whole seeds (less bioavailable), ground meal/flour (preferred for nutrient absorption), or oil/capsules.
