Overview

FLG-SED1 is an investigational fluid-gel eye drop formulation containing blood serum, developed by the University of Birmingham and its spin-out Healome Therapeutics. It is designed to treat moderate to severe dry eye disease (DED) and ocular surface disease (OSD). The formulation utilizes a shear-responsive fluid-gel platform (typically based on gellan gum) that flows like a liquid during blinking but self-structures into a thin, clear, protective, and highly lubricating layer over the ocular surface. This gel acts as a carrier to deliver essential nutrients and growth factors from the co-formulated blood serum, extending the retention time of the therapeutic components on the eye compared to standard serum eye drops (which are rapidly cleared). FLG-SED1 is being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to assess its safety, tolerability, and efficacy in improving ocular surface health and patient comfort.
