Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flibanserin is a small molecule drug approved for the treatment of acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women. It was originally developed as an antidepressant by Boehringer Ingelheim but was repurposed after showing efficacy in increasing sexual desire. Flibanserin acts as a serotonin receptor modulator, functioning as an agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors, which leads to changes in levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the brain. This modulation is thought to increase sexual desire and reduce distress related to low libido[1][5][7][10].
