Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flora Pro.activ is a functional food product, specifically a margarine spread enriched with plant sterols (phytosterols), developed by Unilever for the management of elevated cholesterol levels. The active components, plant sterols, are structurally similar to cholesterol and work by competitively inhibiting the absorption of both dietary and biliary cholesterol from the digestive tract into the bloodstream. Clinical evidence, including studies by CSIRO, indicates that daily consumption can lead to a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (approximately 10%) without affecting HDL levels, thereby potentially reducing the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. The brand is currently owned and manufactured by Upfield following its acquisition of Unilever's spreads business.
