Florasulam is a selective, post-emergent herbicide belonging to the triazolopyrimidine sulfonanilide chemical family. It is primarily used for the control of broadleaf weeds in cereal crops (such as wheat, barley, oats, rye, and triticale) and turfgrass (including residential lawns, sports fields, golf courses). Florasulam acts by inhibiting the plant enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), which is essential for synthesizing branched-chain amino acids like valine, leucine, and isoleucine. This inhibition disrupts protein synthesis in susceptible plants leading to growth cessation and eventual death of targeted weeds. The compound exhibits high selectivity—effectively controlling a wide range of broad-leaved weeds while sparing grasses—and works at low application rates with rapid visible effects on weed growth[3][4][5][6]. Florasulam has low acute toxicity in mammals but can be moderately to highly toxic to birds and aquatic organisms[8].
