Florbenazine F-18 is a radiopharmaceutical small molecule, specifically a dihydrotetrabenazine analog labeled with the positron-emitting isotope fluorine F 18. It acts as a ligand for vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 (VMAT2), binding to VMAT2 expressed on monoamine neurons in the central nervous system and pancreatic beta-cells. Upon administration, it enables visualization of VMAT2-expressing cells using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. This allows assessment of functional monoamine neurons and pancreatic beta-cell function, supporting early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia with Lewy bodies[1][5]. Florbenazine F‑18 has reached up to Phase II/III clinical development as an investigational diagnostic agent.
