Overview

Florbetaben is a fluorine-18-labeled stilbene derivative used as a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the brain. It binds specifically to β-amyloid plaques, allowing visualization and estimation of plaque density in adult patients with cognitive impairment who are being evaluated for Alzheimer's disease and other causes of cognitive decline. The drug crosses the blood-brain barrier after intravenous administration, selectively accumulating in regions with β-amyloid deposits. The positron signal from the fluorine‑18 isotope is detected by PET scanning, providing images that help differentiate Alzheimer's disease from other forms of dementia. Florbetaben does not bind to tau or α-synuclein aggregates and has high plasma protein binding. It was developed for routine clinical use and approved in multiple regions including the US, EU, South Korea, and Canada[1][2][3][7].
