Florfenicol is a synthetic, fluorinated analog of thiamphenicol and chloramphenicol, used exclusively in veterinary medicine. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Florfenicol acts primarily as a bacteriostatic agent by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity and thereby blocking bacterial protein synthesis. At higher concentrations or against certain species, it may exhibit bactericidal effects. Florfenicol is approved for use in food animals such as cattle and swine for the treatment of respiratory diseases (e.g., bovine respiratory disease complex, swine respiratory disease complex) caused by pathogens including Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Histophilus somni, Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Streptococcus suis, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Glaesserella parasuis (Haemophilus parasuis), Salmonella Choleraesuis among others[1][2][3][5][7]. It also has reported anti-inflammatory properties through reduction of immune cell proliferation and cytokine production[3]. Florfenicol’s structure makes it less susceptible to certain resistance mechanisms compared to its analogs[6]. Developed by Merck Animal Health.
