flortaucipir

Flortaucipir is a radioactive diagnostic agent used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to detect aggregated tau neurofibrillary tangles in the brains of adults being evaluated for Alzheimer's disease. It is a small, lipophilic molecule that crosses the blood-brain barrier and selectively binds to paired helical filament (PHF) tau aggregates, which are one of the two required neuropathological hallmarks for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. The drug does not bind significantly to beta-amyloid or α-synuclein and is not indicated for chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Flortaucipir is administered intravenously, and its radioactive decay enables visualization of tau pathology via PET scan. The drug was developed by Avid Radiopharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Eli Lilly), with Eli Lilly as its manufacturer and marketer under the brand name Tauvid[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
