Floseal Hemostatic Matrix is a topical hemostatic agent consisting of a proprietary combination of bovine-derived gelatin granules and human or recombinant thrombin. It is designed to control bleeding during surgical procedures when conventional methods like pressure, ligature, or cautery are ineffective or impractical. The gelatin granules provide a physical scaffold (tamponade effect) that conforms to irregular wound surfaces, while the thrombin component actively converts the patient's endogenous fibrinogen into a stable fibrin clot. This dual mechanism allows for rapid hemostasis, typically within two minutes. The product was extensively studied by the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, specifically in the context of reducing blood loss and transfusion requirements during unilateral total knee arthroplasty.
