FluA-CAR T-cells are an experimental adoptive cellular therapy designed to treat or prevent severe Influenza A virus infections. These T-cells are genetically engineered to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) that recognizes specific viral proteins on the surface of infected cells or the virions themselves. Common targets include the highly conserved extracellular domain of the Matrix 2 protein (M2e) or specific epitopes of Hemagglutinin (HA). By bypassing the need for MHC-restricted antigen presentation, these CAR T-cells can directly identify and eliminate influenza-infected cells, potentially providing a universal or broad-spectrum treatment option for various strains of Influenza A, including those with pandemic potential. Research in this area is primarily in the preclinical stage, exploring the efficacy of these cells in reducing viral load and improving survival in animal models of severe respiratory infection.
