Overview

Fluad + PPV23 is a combination of two vaccines administered together to provide protection against both seasonal influenza and pneumococcal disease. - **Fluad** is an adjuvanted, inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine containing surface antigens (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from four recommended influenza virus strains. It uses the MF59C.1 squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion as an adjuvant to enhance immune response[4]. The primary mechanism is induction of neutralizing antibodies against the included viral hemagglutinins. - **PPV23** (Pneumovax 23) is a polysaccharide vaccine containing purified capsular polysaccharides from 23 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae. It induces type-specific antibodies that promote opsonization and phagocytosis of pneumococci by leukocytes[6]. The combination aims to reduce morbidity and mortality from both diseases, especially in older adults or those at higher risk for complications. Studies suggest that concomitant administration may offer greater protective effects against pneumonia and related hospitalizations than either vaccine alone[3][5].
