Overview

Fluanisone is a typical antipsychotic and sedative of the butyrophenone chemical class. It acts primarily as a dopamine receptor antagonist, particularly at D2 receptors, which underlies its antipsychotic and sedative effects. Fluanisone was used in the treatment of schizophrenia and mania in humans, but is now mainly utilized in veterinary medicine—most notably as part of the combination product fentanyl/fluanisone (Hypnorm) for rodent analgesia and anesthesia during short surgical procedures. Its mechanism also involves enhancement of GABAergic transmission, contributing to CNS depression[3][5][6][8].
