Flubendazole is a synthetic benzimidazole anthelmintic used primarily to treat nematode (worm) infections in humans and animals. It acts by inhibiting the formation of cytoplasmic microtubules in the intestinal cells of helminths, disrupting glucose uptake and depleting glycogen stores, which leads to energy depletion and death of the parasite within days[1][3]. Its main indications include enterobiasis (pinworm), ascariasis, hookworm infections, and trichuriasis[3]. In addition to its antiparasitic use, flubendazole has shown experimental anticancer activity by binding tubulin at a site similar but not identical to vinblastine’s site; it disrupts microtubule function, induces G2/M cell cycle arrest, autophagy, apoptosis, ferroptosis, inhibits angiogenesis and cancer stem cell properties via pathways such as STAT3, NF-kB, AKT/p53/JNK/Atg4B/Hh signaling[6]. It is available over-the-counter in Europe for human use under various brand names[2][5].
