FluCide-HP is an investigational antiviral agent developed by NanoViricides, Inc., designed for the treatment of severe and highly pathogenic influenza infections, including H5N1 and H7N9. Utilizing the company's proprietary nanoviricide platform, the drug consists of polymeric micelles functionalized with specific ligands that mimic the sialic acid receptors on host cells. These ligands bind to the hemagglutinin (HA) protein on the surface of the influenza virus. Unlike traditional small-molecule antivirals that inhibit viral replication inside the cell, FluCide-HP acts extracellularly by "trapping" and neutralizing the virus particles, effectively dismantling the viral envelope and preventing cellular entry. This biomimetic approach is intended to provide broad-spectrum activity against various influenza strains and reduce the likelihood of resistance.
