Overview

FluCide-I is an experimental nanomedicine-based antiviral drug candidate being developed by NanoViricides for the treatment of influenza, including H1N1 swine flu, H5N1 bird flu, and seasonal influenza A and B strains.[2][4][15][11] It is a polymeric nanoparticle (“nanoviricide”) that presents ligands designed to mimic the host-cell receptors recognized by influenza viral surface proteins; by binding these proteins with high avidity, the nanomicelle is intended to neutralize and dismantle enveloped influenza virions in circulation.[2][15][11] Preclinical studies have evaluated both injectable and oral formulations, with oral FluCide candidates reported to reduce viral lung loads and improve survival in small-animal models, in some comparisons outperforming oral oseltamivir.[6][9][13][14] FluCide-I has been advanced through pre-IND interactions with the FDA and collaborative in vitro and in vivo testing at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but it remains a development-stage, non-approved drug.[2][11][15]
