This investigational triple-combination therapy is being developed by The University of Hong Kong for the treatment of adult patients hospitalized with pneumonia secondary to influenza A infection. The regimen consists of three small molecule drugs: flufenamic acid (FFA), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID); clarithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic with immunomodulatory properties; and oseltamivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor. This combination aims to provide a synergistic effect by combining direct antiviral activity with the modulation of the host's inflammatory response, which is often responsible for the severe lung injury seen in influenza-associated pneumonia. A Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT03238612) was initiated to evaluate whether this triple therapy improves clinical outcomes and reduces viral load compared to standard oseltamivir monotherapy.
