Overview

Flufenoxine is a small molecule antidepressant that was developed by the French pharmaceutical company Servier in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Identified by the code name S 1694, it belongs to the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The drug's primary mechanism of action involves the potent inhibition of the serotonin transporter (SERT), which prevents the reabsorption of serotonin into the presynaptic neuron, thereby enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Flufenoxine was investigated as a potential treatment for major depressive disorder and demonstrated efficacy in preclinical models and early clinical evaluations. However, its development was ultimately halted, and it did not achieve regulatory approval or commercial availability in major markets.
