Overview

Flumequine is a synthetic, first-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, primarily in veterinary medicine for enteric infections and previously in humans for urinary tract infections. Its antibacterial activity stems from inhibition of DNA gyrase (bacterial topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and cell division. This mechanism disrupts the separation of bacterial DNA strands, thereby inhibiting cell proliferation. Flumequine has been withdrawn from human use due to toxicity concerns but remains available as an oral solution for veterinary applications[1][2][3][4][5][6].
