Overview

Flumetasone (also known as flumethasone) is a synthetic difluorinated corticosteroid for topical use with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic (anti-itch), vasoconstrictive and immunosuppressive properties. It acts as a moderately potent glucocorticoid receptor agonist. By binding to the glucocorticoid receptor in target tissues, it modulates gene expression to suppress inflammation and immune responses. Its effects include decreased lymphatic system function, reduced immunoglobulin and complement concentrations, lower lymphocyte counts and interference with antigen-antibody binding. Flumetasone is used primarily for treating skin conditions such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis and diaper rash; it is also used in combination products (e.g., with clioquinol) for otitis externa and otomycosis. The drug is often formulated as the pivalic acid ester prodrug called flumetasone pivalate[1][2][5][6].
