Overview

FluMist Quadrivalent is a live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) indicated for active immunization for the prevention of influenza disease caused by influenza A subtype viruses and type B viruses. Developed by MedImmune (a subsidiary of AstraZeneca), it is administered as an intranasal spray. The vaccine contains four strains of influenza virus (two Type A and two Type B) that are cold-adapted, temperature-sensitive, and attenuated. These characteristics allow the virus to replicate in the cooler environment of the nasopharynx but restrict replication in the warmer lower respiratory tract. The vaccine induces both mucosal and systemic immunity, mimicking natural infection. In the context of clinical research at Stanford University, it has been used in twin studies to investigate the heritability of immune responses compared to inactivated influenza vaccines (IIV).
