Overview
Flunarizine dihydrochloride is a non-selective calcium channel blocker and a derivative of cinnarizine. It is primarily indicated for the prophylaxis of migraine and the symptomatic treatment of vestibular disorders, such as vertigo of central or peripheral origin. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of calcium influx into cells through voltage-gated calcium channels, particularly under conditions of calcium overload, thereby protecting neurons and vascular smooth muscle from damage. Additionally, it exhibits antihistaminic (H1) and anti-dopaminergic (D2) properties, which contribute to its vestibular suppressant effects but also its potential for extrapyramidal side effects.
