Flunitrazepam is a potent benzodiazepine derivative with strong hypnotic and sedative effects. It acts as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant and is used for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia and as a premedication for anesthesia in countries where it is approved. Its mechanism of action involves enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter at GABA-A receptors in the brain. This results in sedation (drowsiness), muscle relaxation (skeletal muscle relaxant properties), anxiolysis (reduction of anxiety), and amnesia (memory loss). The drug has a long half-life due to active metabolites. It was patented in 1962 and came into medical use in 1974.[4][6] Flunitrazepam is not approved for medical use in the United States but is available elsewhere under various brand names such as Rohypnol. It has gained notoriety as a "date rape" drug due to its ability to cause anterograde amnesia when administered surreptitiously.[1][3]
