Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluocinolone acetonide is a synthetic corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. In the context of the Retisert intravitreal implant, it is used for the treatment of chronic non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment of the eye, including refractory cases associated with Behcet's disease. The implant is surgically placed in the vitreous and provides sustained release of the drug for approximately 2.5 to 3 years. It works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, thereby inhibiting the expression of inflammatory mediators and reducing ocular inflammation. The specific trial mentioned (NCT01459952) was a Phase 4 study conducted by Asan Medical Center to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this implant in patients with refractory ocular Behcet's disease.
