Iluvien is a non-bioerodable, sustained-release intravitreal implant containing 0.19 mg of the corticosteroid fluocinolone acetonide. It is designed for ophthalmic use and delivers submicrogram levels of the drug directly into the vitreous cavity of the eye over up to 36 months. The primary mechanism involves local anti-inflammatory action by modulating multiple inflammatory pathways through glucocorticoid receptor agonism, reducing edema and inflammation in retinal tissues. Iluvien is indicated for: - The treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) in patients previously treated with corticosteroids who did not have a clinically significant rise in intraocular pressure. - The treatment of chronic non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment of the eye (NIU-PS). The product was originally developed by Alimera Sciences and is now marketed by ANI Pharmaceuticals. Common adverse effects include increased intraocular pressure and cataract formation[1][2][3][4][5].
