Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluocinolone acetonide topical oil is a low-to-medium potency corticosteroid formulation containing 0.01% fluocinolone acetonide. It is a synthetic fluorinated corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. The oil formulation is specifically indicated for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis in pediatric and adult patients, and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. As a synthetic glucocorticoid, it diffuses across cell membranes to bind with high affinity to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors. This complex then translocates to the nucleus, where it modulates gene expression to induce the production of anti-inflammatory proteins (such as lipocortins) and inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. The oil vehicle is particularly effective for treating hairy areas like the scalp or for providing an occlusive effect on dry, eczematous skin.
