Overview

Fluorescein-conjugated wisteria floribunda lectin is an investigational fluorescent imaging agent developed by the University of Oxford for the detection of colorectal dysplasia, polyps, and cancer. It consists of a plant-derived lectin from *Wisteria floribunda* (WFL or WFA) chemically linked to the fluorescent dye fluorescein. The agent works by binding specifically to N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)-containing glycan structures that are differentially expressed on the surface of abnormal colorectal tissues compared to healthy mucosa. During endoscopy or surgery, the agent is applied topically to the colon; subsequent illumination with a specific wavelength of light causes the bound lectin to fluoresce, allowing clinicians to identify and delineate dysplastic or malignant lesions in real-time.
