Fluorescein lisicol is a fluorescent-labelled bile acid analog used as an investigational diagnostic marker for liver function, specifically to assess hepatic biliary transporter function. It is synthesized by conjugating fluorescein with cholyl lysine, allowing it to mimic natural bile acids while providing fluorescent properties for visualization. The compound is primarily taken up into hepatocytes via the organic anion transporting polypeptide 1B3 (OATP1B3) and excreted into bile through ATP-binding cassette transporters ABCC2 and ABCC3. Fluorescein lisicol has been studied in clinical trials for its utility in diagnosing and evaluating pharmacokinetics in conditions such as hepatic cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease[1][2][3][5][7].
