Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluoride neutral NaF gel 2% is a topical dental formulation containing 2% sodium fluoride (NaF) as its active ingredient. It is used primarily as a desensitizing agent for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity and for caries prevention. The gel works by delivering fluoride ions that interact with hydroxyapatite in the dental enamel and dentin, converting it into fluorapatite, which is more resistant to acid dissolution and promotes remineralization. In the context of dentin hypersensitivity, it works by occluding open dentinal tubules and forming calcium fluoride precipitates that block fluid movement and subsequent nerve stimulation (the hydrodynamic theory). In clinical trials, such as NCT02128633 sponsored by the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, 2% neutral NaF gel has been utilized as an active comparator to evaluate the efficacy of homecare desensitizing agents.
