fluorine-18 FELP is a radiolabeled amino acid analog and PET radiopharmaceutical developed by Universitair Ziekenhuis Gent (Ghent University Hospital). It is designed to target the Large Neutral Amino Acid Transporter 1 (LAT1), also known as SLC7A5, which is frequently overexpressed in malignant cells to support the high metabolic demand for protein synthesis. As a substrate for LAT1, 18F-FELP is actively transported into tumor cells, providing high-contrast imaging of metabolic activity. It is primarily investigated for the diagnosis, grading, and treatment monitoring of brain tumors, such as gliomas, where it offers superior tumor-to-background contrast compared to conventional 18F-FDG PET due to low background uptake in normal brain tissue.
