Fluorine F 18 fluorobenzyl triphenyl phosphonium (FBnTP) is a radioconjugate and cationic lipophilic agent used as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer. It consists of a benzyltriphenylphosphonium moiety labeled with the radioisotope fluorine-18. FBnTP selectively accumulates in mitochondria in proportion to the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), making it an effective potentiometric probe for imaging tissues rich in mitochondria such as brown adipose tissue and myocardium. Its uptake is highly sensitive to changes in mitochondrial membrane potential, allowing noninvasive assessment of mitochondrial function and thermogenic activity. FBnTP has been investigated for PET imaging applications including detection of malignant breast cancer and assessment of brown adipose tissue thermogenesis[2][3][5][6].
