Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluorouracil implants are a sustained-release formulation of the antimetabolite chemotherapy drug fluorouracil (also known as 5-fluorouracil or 5FU). These implants are designed to deliver high local concentrations of the drug over an extended period, typically placed intraoperatively for adjuvant chemotherapy in cancers such as gastric, colorectal, ovarian, and liver cancer. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of thymidylate synthase and incorporation into RNA and DNA, disrupting nucleic acid synthesis and leading to cell death in rapidly dividing tumor cells. Sustained-release delivery via implant allows for prolonged exposure at the tumor site with reduced systemic toxicity[2][5].
