Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluorouracil implants, marketed under the brand name SinoFuan, are a sustained-release formulation of the antimetabolite fluorouracil (5-FU) designed for localized chemotherapy. Developed by Simcere Pharmaceutical, these implants are specifically indicated for intraperitoneal administration during surgery for patients with gastric cancer, particularly stage III. The implants provide a high local concentration of fluorouracil in the peritoneal cavity, aiming to eliminate residual tumor cells and prevent peritoneal recurrence while minimizing systemic toxicity. Fluorouracil works by inhibiting thymidylate synthase, an enzyme crucial for DNA synthesis, thereby inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in rapidly dividing cancer cells.
