fluoxetine

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). It is also approved for use in children and adolescents for depression and has been used off-label for other conditions such as anxiety disorders and premature ejaculation. Fluoxetine works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing its availability to help regulate mood. Developed by Eli Lilly and Company in 1972 and first approved in 1987/1986, it was one of the first SSRIs introduced to clinical practice. Fluoxetine is available as a generic medication worldwide. It may be combined with olanzapine under the brand name Symbyax for treatment-resistant depression or bipolar I depressive episodes.
