Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fluoxetine + magnesium refers to the co-administration of fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant, and magnesium, an essential mineral often used as a dietary supplement. Fluoxetine acts by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing its availability and improving mood in conditions such as major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Magnesium is involved in numerous physiological processes including nerve transmission and muscle contraction; it is commonly supplemented to prevent or treat magnesium deficiency. There is no evidence that "fluoxetine + magnesium" exists as a single fixed-dose combination product; rather, this refers to their concurrent use. Some clinical studies have explored whether adding magnesium supplementation to standard fluoxetine therapy may improve outcomes in depression. One small double-blind study found no significant difference between fluoxetine plus magnesium versus fluoxetine plus placebo on depression scores overall but suggested that certain patient characteristics (such as lower baseline depression scores or female gender) might increase the odds of remission when treatment was augmented with magnesium[5]. No major pharmacokinetic interactions are reported between these agents[2][6], though some sources note that therapeutic efficacy could be affected when combined[6]. Caution should always be exercised when combining supplements with prescription medications due to potential for unstudied interactions[4][7].
