Overview

Fluoxetine + simvastatin is a combination of two small molecule drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing its availability in the synaptic cleft and enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission[1]. Simvastatin is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) used to lower lipid levels and reduce cardiovascular risk by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver[4]. The combination has been studied for potential synergistic effects on mood disorders and may provide anxiolytic and antidepressant properties according to animal studies[3]. There are pharmacokinetic interactions between these drugs; fluoxetine can increase serum concentrations of simvastatin due to CYP enzyme inhibition[1][7].
