Overview

Fluralaner is a systemic insecticide and acaricide belonging to the isoxazoline class. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine for the treatment and prevention of flea and tick infestations in dogs and cats. Fluralaner acts as an inhibitor of the arthropod nervous system by antagonizing ligand-gated chloride channels—specifically gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors and glutamate receptors—leading to paralysis and death of target parasites. The drug exhibits high selectivity for arthropod neurons over mammalian neurons, contributing to its safety profile in companion animals. Fluralaner was developed by MSD Animal Health (a division of Merck & Co.) and is marketed under several brand names including Bravecto (for dogs and cats), Exzolt (for poultry), Bravecto Plus (combination with moxidectin for cats), and Bravecto 1-Month (shorter duration formulation). It has been approved for use in multiple regions including the US, EU, Australia, and others[1][2][3][4][5][8].
