flurbiprofen

Flurbiprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the propionic acid class, structurally related to ibuprofen, fenoprofen, and ketoprofen. It is used primarily for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, providing relief from pain, inflammation, swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. Flurbiprofen acts as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in inflammation and pain. It is available as an oral tablet for systemic use and also in ophthalmic formulations for prevention or reduction of intraoperative miosis during ocular surgery. The S-enantiomer has both anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects via inhibition of prostaglandin biosynthesis; R-flurbiprofen exhibits antinociceptive activity but not significant anti-inflammatory action.
