Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Flurbiprofen axetil is an injectable prodrug of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) flurbiprofen. It is formulated as a lipid emulsion for intravenous administration, which significantly reduces the local vascular irritation and pain at the injection site typically associated with flurbiprofen. Upon administration, flurbiprofen axetil is rapidly hydrolyzed by esterases in the blood and liver to its active form, flurbiprofen. The active metabolite acts by non-selectively inhibiting cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, thereby blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation. It is primarily used for the management of postoperative pain and cancer-related pain, particularly in Japan and China.
