Overview

Flurithromycin is a semisynthetic, fluorinated macrolide antibiotic derived from erythromycin A, in which the hydrogen at position 8 is replaced by a fluorine atom. It was developed to improve acid stability and pharmacokinetic properties compared to erythromycin. Flurithromycin acts as an antibacterial agent by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and suppressing bacterial growth. Its spectrum of activity closely resembles that of erythromycin but with greater acid stability. The drug has been used primarily for respiratory tract infections and oral infections, with clinical development reaching up to phase II trials in some regions and marketed status in Italy for these indications[1][3][4][5][6][7][8].
