Overview

This entry refers to two alternative fixed-dose combination inhalers used for the maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): fluticasone propionate + salmeterol and budesonide + formoterol. Both combinations pair an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) with a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). The ICS component (fluticasone propionate or budesonide) reduces airway inflammation by inhibiting multiple types of inflammatory cells and mediators. The LABA component (salmeterol or formoterol) relaxes bronchial smooth muscle via selective stimulation of beta2-adrenergic receptors in the airway, leading to bronchodilation. These combinations are not intended for acute symptom relief but are used as controller medications to reduce exacerbations and improve lung function in patients with persistent asthma or COPD[1][2][6].
