Overview

Flutropium bromide is an anticholinergic bronchodilator that functions as a competitive antagonist of acetylcholine. It primarily targets and blocks muscarinic receptors, predominantly M3 muscarinic receptors, located in the smooth muscle of the airways. This action inhibits acetylcholine-induced bronchoconstriction, leading to bronchodilation and improved airflow. Additionally, it helps reduce excessive mucus secretion in the airways. Administered via inhalation, flutropium bromide is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, providing sustained relief due to its prolonged duration of action, typically around 24 hours. Its quaternary ammonium structure contributes to minimal systemic absorption and a favorable side effect profile, making it suitable for inhaled therapy.
