Overview

Fluzone is an inactivated, split-virion influenza vaccine developed and manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur. It contains inactivated influenza virus antigens, specifically hemagglutinin proteins, from influenza A and B strains. The vaccine is produced by propagating the virus in embryonated chicken eggs, inactivating it with formaldehyde, and chemically disrupting it with a non-ionic surfactant to create a split-virus preparation. It is designed to induce the production of antibodies against the hemagglutinin proteins, providing active immunity against seasonal influenza. Fluzone is available in various formulations, including trivalent and quadrivalent versions, as well as standard-dose and high-dose versions, and can be administered via intramuscular or intradermal routes.
