FM-TP5000 is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent developed by Fujifilm Toyama Chemical for use in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It is a small molecule tracer labeled with the radioisotope fluorine-18 ([18F]) that specifically binds to aggregated tau proteins, which form neurofibrillary tangles in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies. Unlike amyloid-beta tracers, tau tracers like FM-TP5000 are intended to correlate more closely with cognitive decline and neuronal loss, providing a more precise assessment of disease stage and progression. The drug is primarily being developed to support the differential diagnosis and monitoring of neurodegenerative conditions by enabling the visualization and quantification of tau pathology in vivo.
