fMLKLIV is a formylated mitochondrial peptide that serves as a potent agonist for the formyl peptide receptor (FPR), specifically FPR1. It is a hexapeptide with the sequence N-formyl-Met-Leu-Lys-Leu-Ile-Val, derived from mitochondrial protein cleavage. In high-grade glioblastoma, fMLKLIV is released from necrotic tumor regions and acts as a chemoattractant and mitogen by binding to FPRs expressed on the surface of glioma cells. This interaction triggers rapid intracellular calcium mobilization, promoting tumor cell migration, proliferation, and angiogenesis. As such, fMLKLIV and its receptor are investigated as potential targets for therapeutic intervention in malignant astrocytomas.
