Overview

FNP-59 is a fluorine-18 (18F) analog of NP-59 (6-beta-iodomethyl-19-norcholesterol) developed as a PET imaging agent for functional imaging of the adrenal glands based on cholesterol use. It was designed to overcome the limitations of the original iodine-131 (131I) NP-59, which had poor resolution, manufacturing challenges, and high radiation dosimetry. FNP-59 provides higher resolution images with significantly lower radiation exposure to patients, particularly in the gonads and thyroid. The radiotracer demonstrates expected uptake in tissues that use cholesterol, including the liver, gallbladder, and adrenal glands. It has potential applications in diagnosing adrenocortical diseases, including primary aldosteronism, Cushing's disease, and adrenal cortical carcinoma, offering a noninvasive alternative to invasive adrenal vein sampling procedures.
